Dismantling 1,500m of Overhead Gas Pipes
and 90t Rail Bridge Lift
Volker Stevin
This scheme was particularly complicated as we had to use cold cutting techniques to remove the pipeline due to toxic residues within the pipeline. In addition it was within the live site of Firth Rixon of Rotherham.
Once the pipeline was removed we were ablt to remove the bridge with a 500t crane - see below.
The bridge was lifted out in 5 sections, 3 central and sides. The central sections consisted of a concrete deck cast between rails on top of rotton sleepers resting on structural steelwork.
The rails were lifted with the steelwork acting as a cradle for the deck.
The 3 central lifts weighed in at up to 9t per lift at 36m radius and the 2 side lifts weighed over 25t and 26m radius.
